    • Transporting Infantry/Tanks to another continent

      Hello

I have just started CON and progressing well.

Once you have conquered a continent and wish to take some infantry/tanks to another continent to conquer over there, how exactly do you do it please?

I know that if you have cities in your own continent with airports, you can airlift/drop them from one city to another etc, but how do you get them across the sea....

      Many thanks

Whenever you give land units orders directing them out to sea, they will move to a port, once there, they will take some time (~2 hrs)* to disembark, once they embark, they turn into a transport ship, much in the same way land units turn into a transport plane when flying from one airport to another. Once a transport ship. you give them orders to cross the sea, and further orders to land at another port icon, usually a city. There, they have to undergo a disembark process (another ~2 hrs)* making them vulnerable. When they disembark they turn back into land units. So it is usually smart to have accompanying naval vessels there to provide cover.

If you seize a city or territory with an airbase/airfield, you can fly them over, provided they have the ability and are in ferry range for that particular unit/level

      * - more or less, depends on unit and level of naval base factors.

actually you can "convert" them into land units from the second they they started the disembarking; you simply have to give the movement order again and they'll transform ... you still have to wait the like 2h until you can move them tho

    • i would like to clarify. i can move my main battle tanks and artillery units from port to port through an automatic transport vessel similar to what we do with infantry?

if so, i had no clue we could do this. i was moving everything slowly by land from my home cities and was taking me 24 hours. and not so much a crow flies to my destination
    • @dfrost

Yes, everything (except aircraft [normally, there's an exception]) can by transported by sea. If you just pick a destination, the game will automatically select the fastest travel route, whether that's by sea, land, or air. You can choose a different path, but if you're talking about just travel time, the game automatically defaults to it. It takes time for units to embark and disembark from naval transports.

Also, (ground unit) naval transport ships are COMPLETELY undefended (if not accompanied by a warship), and there is NOTHING players like me would rather do than put another player's undefended ground units on the sea floor.
    • Keep in mind sea transports have risks if not escorted with ships. They have zero defense and will be sunk in short order.

Best to clear path with ships to secure shipping lane. Initially send big enough force to take/hold a foothold. Setup airfield if cant get a free enemy airbase. Fly rest over.

I dont do tanks too but one tough game Id drive armor from Myanmar through india to mid east to avoid being sunk. If you setup a main military logistics highway on shortest path. It really didnt take that much longer than sailing and safer.

DO NOT BELIEVE THIS!!! On many occasions, I have plotted quicker routes by myself with waypoints that are hours less than the computer suggested route.

awesome. i am gonna see what is faster then. you know, the way i have been traveling before was sections by sections through waypoints and trying to figure out the fastest path that way. i'm an idiot haha

this is some valuable info here
No, dude, if anything, you may be clairvoyant.

    • yes computer doesnt always pick shortest path on water; it doesnt do good job of factoring in speed diff from shallow to deep. Case in point going around s africa CPU plots right on coast (shallow) and even though shortest, is longer due to 50 pct less speed. Were as you go out one section than loop around can save multi hrs even going further. Sometimes get odd Ferry jumps going way out of way if out of direct ferry range in air too.

Same with multiple stacks coming same point A to B. The CPU tends to pick slightly different routes; which I guess is good in away to avoid a chokepoint trap.

Easiest way is to display topographical map and go for open ground. If building Mil Logistics start with largest prov to get biggest bang for the buck. going across India some open ground prov like 3 times size of others so im building those 1st as basically get speed boost 3 x longer for same cost.

Mil Logistics underrated for home defense too. If get country like Myanmar cities close but jungles; the logistics let you move troops were needed faster if attacked.
    • Ugh. Lol, people on this Forum ALWAYS have to be like, "No, sir! There's THIS weird exception, though!"

Okay, yes, there are weird exceptions. IN GENERAL, THOUGH, the game TRIES to choose the fastest route for you MOST OF THE TIME. Cripes.

If an overland route goes through mountains and jungles and around a river, etc., and takes 28 hours, and an overwater route to the same destination takes 15 total hours, which one is the game going to pick? Alright, then.

The guy was talking about driving his tanks through the jungles of Central America because he didn't realize he could put them on ships. I was just trying to point out to him that if he'd chosen his destination, the game would have given him the maritime option if it had been significantly shorter.

I feel like this has to have some pretty specific circumstances involved, Dealer. Otherwise, how do you think the game is programmed to choose a route? I'm not saying there is no conceivable way that anyone ever found a faster route under the right circumstances, but, in general, the game is made to select the fastest route based on travel times, territorial permissions, unit limitations, etc. What's your theory, that it's random?
Perhaps it is mainly Buckeye's point, which is 100% true, and I almost always play island/coastal nations so this comes up more often than not, but I think it's algorithim for picking routes prioritizes shortest distance over shortest travel time.

The answer is pretty simple. If a coastal city (or a pontoon province) is nearby, your stack will automatically select the nearest one and use it to embark to sea. When disembarking on enemy land, you have to use an enemy coastal city. You can't disembark on rural provinces (unless there is a pontoon built there)

If that was 100% true, it would route you directly through mountainous regions rather than around them.
You're right, the game calculates the route that takes the least time, and automatically assigns it to the unit.

That's why I said "prioritizes" instead of "always chooses" as I think it considers factors such as that to a degree. I believe it takes it into account, just not very reliably. I haven't really examined it's failed suggestions to try to fathom the cause of the error. All I am certain of is: "the game will automatically select the fastest travel route" is a FALSE statement.

Lol, alright, man. Like I said, people on this Forum will try to dispute anything. I'll go back to my correction:

Okay, yes, there are weird exceptions. IN GENERAL, THOUGH, the game TRIES to choose the fastest route for you MOST OF THE TIME. Cripes.

And, like I also said, my response was in response to a specific situation the player had mentioned. I didn't mean it to be "unable to be disproven in any situation ever." He said he didn't realize he could put tanks on transports rather than running them through the jungles and mountains of Central America, and I was just trying to let him know that IN HIS SITUATION if he had selected the destination directly from the point of origin, the game PROBABLY would have offered him a faster route if one was available.
