Simply - customizable units.
Now the details:
"A game is a series of meaningful choices." - Sid Meier. Every nation could have different versions of same model like F-16 Variants, by choosing it's own way in the research tree. Tier I > Tier II > Tier III stats flows normally, but every upgrade between them is available to choose from the list (or something like that). It means that you could create your own sub-doctrine.
Research Line Pattern:
Tier I > Custom Variant I > Custom Variant II > Tier II > Custom Variant III > Tier III > Custom Variant IV.

Examples:
Air Superiority Figher:
Standard variants to choose from:
Reinforced Airframe (+5HP)
Engine Replacement (+4Speed)
Fuel Optimization Measures (+150 range)
Steamlined Mobilization (-4hours mob. speed)
And more variants to choose from:
Missile countermeasures( +5HP )
Small Cluster Bombs ( +1 structure damage)
Additional Fuel Tanks ( +100 range - 1 speed )
Rotary Autocannons ( +1 to infantry damage )
Improved Aerodynamics ( +2 speed )
Additional Pilots Training (+2 Anti-air damage)
ASF Production Patterns ( -4hours mob. speed )
ASF Replaceable Parts Industry ( -20% maintenance costs )
New Materials Substitutes ( -20% production costs )
I've mastered unit to something like this for example:
Tier I > Reinforced airframe (+5HP) > Missile countermeasures (+5HP) >>
Tier II > Additional Pilots Training (+2AA dmg) >>
Tier III > Engine Replacement (+4 Speed)
My friend in same doctrine chosen differently:
Tier I > New Materials Substitutes (-20% prod. costs) > ASF Replaceable Parts Industry (-20% maintenance costs)>>
Tier II > ASF Production Patterns (-4h mob.speed) >>
Tier III > Steamlined Mobilization (-4h mob. speed)
So, we are in the same doctrine but we developed different variants of the same unit.
Strike Fighter:
Standard variants to choose from:
Reinforced Airframe (+5HP)
Air-to-Air Armament Upgrade (+1AA)
Fuel Optimization Measures (+150 range)
Steamlined Mobilization (-4hours mob. speed)
And more variants to choose from:
Cruise Missile Launch System (as an option)
Anti-Ship Missiles ( +1 damage to ships )
Missile countermeasures ( +5HP )
Improved Aerodynamics ( +2 speed)
Additional Fuel Tanks ( +100 range - 1 speed )
Additional Pilots Training (+1 to infantry damage +1 to Armored Damage)
Strike Fighters Production Patterns ( -4hours mob. speed )
Strike Fighters Replaceable Parts Industry ( -20% maintenance costs )
New Materials Substitutes ( -20% production costs )
Strategic Bomber:
Standard variants to choose from:
Reinforced Airframe ( +5HP )
Fuel Optimization Measures ( +150 range )
Increased Missile Hardpoints ( +1 missile fired )
Bunker Busting Ordnance ( ignores bunkers )
Plus more variants to choose from:
Laser Guided Bombs (swaps base infantry damage value with armored)
Stratospheric Flight ( ignores point defense damage of ground AA systems )
Napalm bombs( +3 infantry dmg )
Missile countermeasures( +5HP )
Additional Pilots Training (+2 to infantry damage )
Strategic Bombers Production Patterns ( -4hours mob. speed )
Strategic Bombers Replaceable Parts Industry ( -20% maintenance costs )
New Materials Substitutes ( -20% production costs )
...
And so on I could do a full list for every unit, but only If I would be sure that it will be implemented. And It won't be, soon.
Probably a lot of fantasy here, I'm not an expert.
