I think there should be more information about games in progress for late comers, namely the coalitions list.
A list of coalitions in the game would be helpful in deciding whether or not if I should join a game late.
There have been times where ive joined a game late, and noticed all the top, most powerful countries in the game are in the same coalition, so I know theres very little chance of winning, so I immediately leave the game and never come back. Knowing the coalitions before joining and knowing who are in those coalitions can be a deciding factor for people thinking about joining late games and it may cut down on people joining and then going inactive immediately afterwards.
