Check if your units show the entrenchment icon or not, than you know, if they get a bonus or not.

I am actually curious about something. I use Nat'l guard a lot and it says they have a 50% defense mod in cities and suburbs. Is that calculated separately from the entrenchment bonus? If i have a unit in a city and hover over the tooltip it says 25%. But if i build a lvl 1 outpost and put a unit there it changes to 45% (i think). The art of war is chess, not checkers. Eentrenchment/bunkers are independent of the combat bonuses attributed to the units.
Using your example of placing a National Guard with 50% urban combat defense bonus into a city fortified with bunkers the enemy will have a seriously bad day flushing this unit out of the city.
This said, one unit is of course still a very low defense and will not behave like the 300 Spartans or such
